Sony FX5 Spec Sheet Covering Stacked Sensors and X-OCN Codecs

Sony has officially announced the FX5, a pivotal expansion to its Cinema Line that bridges the gap between handheld usability and high-end production capability. Rather than serving as a direct replacement for the popular FX3, the FX5 sits strategically between the FX3 and the FX6. The new body combines lightweight, run-and-gun mobility with key technical features previously reserved for flagships like the BURANO and VENISE 2. The FX5 introduces Open Gate recording, internal 16-bit RAW, and a triple base ISO architecture to Sony’s compact cinema lineup.

At the core of the FX5 is a newly developed 16.6-megapixel fully stacked full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor. Stepping up from the 12.1MP sensor found in the FX3 and FX6, this higher-resolution design enables native 5K recording while delivering faster sensor readout speeds to minimize rolling shutter distortion.

Driven by Sony’s BIONZ XR2 image processor and a dedicated AI processing unit, the camera pairs raw sensor output with advanced autofocus capabilities. The system supports Real-Time Tracking, expanded subject recognition (covering humans, animals, and birds), and Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW) for rapidly changing lighting environments.

The sensor rates natively at 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3. Operators can also engage a Dual Gain mode that combines low- and high-gain signals at the sensor level to extend dynamic range to an estimated 16+ stops, prioritizing shadow recovery at the cost of readout speed (capping Open Gate recording at 30p when active).

Physically, the FX5 retains the compact, boxy silhouette of the FX3, weighing 734g (1.62 lbs) with a battery and media card installed. While it remains optimized for gimbals, drones, and tight spaces, several physical and UI revisions target professional crew environments:

  • VENICE-Inspired Interface: The Alpha menu structure has been replaced by a “BIG6” dashboard screen modelled after CineAlta systems, centralizing frame rates, shutter speed, ISO, LUTs, and audio levels.
  • Pro Monitoring Tools: In-camera tools now include waveform, false colour, vectorscope, and focus mapping overlays alongside standard zebra, peaking, and histogram displays.
  • Upgraded Display: A 3.5-inch 16:9 touch-panel LCD (2.76M dots) mounted on a 4-axis multi-angle arm provides a significantly larger viewable area for widescreen video than the FX3’s 3-inch 4:3 panel.
  • Modular Viewfinder: Sony announced an optional 0.58-type detachable OLED EVF (DVF-EL1) featuring 3.68 million dots and 2,500-nit peak brightness. Mounting the EVF utilizes a top-mounted interface port that covers the Multi Interface shoe, requiring operators to choose between the EVF or hot-shoe audio accessories unless remote cables are used.

Hardware connectivity includes dual USB-C ports (one dedicated to power delivery and timecode input via an optional cable), a full-size HDMI Type-A port, an Ethernet terminal for network control, tri-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5/6GHz), and the Venice 2 Multi-Function Dial. The unit uses the NP-SA100 battery, extending continuous recording time up to 130 minutes.

Notably, the FX5 omits an internal electronic variable ND filter, maintaining a smaller chassis at the expense of built-in exposure control.
