Nikon Z 9 Firmware 4.0: A Major Update with New Features and Improvements

Nikon has released a new firmware update for its flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 9. The firmware version 4.0 is the third major update since the camera’s launch, and it brings several new features and improvements for both still and video shooting.

One of the most notable features of the firmware 4.0 is the Auto Capture function, which allows the camera to automatically record still images or video when the subject meets one or more pre-configured criteria, such as motion, distance, or subject detection. This can be useful for situations that require increased automation or when the camera must be positioned in places where the user cannot remain for extended periods of time, such as wildlife photography.

The firmware 4.0 also enhances the video functions of the Z 9 by expanding the minimum ISO sensitivity available with N-Log recording, increasing the number of options available for Hi-Res Zoom speed, and adding slow-motion video recording. Moreover, it improves the subject acquisition performance of 3D-tracking when capturing stills of small and fast-moving subjects, and increases the number of functions that can be assigned to custom controls. The firmware also adds new shutter sound options for users who prefer different sounds.

Smooth slow motion video, in-camera.

Record beautiful 4x and 5x 1080p slow motion footage straight to your memory card, no editing required.

More control over the speed of Hi-Res Zoom.

Select from 11 speed options (previously three) to give your zoom shot exactly the right feel.

Improved 3D-tracking forsmall and fast subjects.

Firmware 4.0 further improves tracking persistence to let you focus on thebest moments.

More Firmware 4.0 enhancements.

  • Set a delay on the shutter button so your hands are off the camera when the shot is taken.

  • Bracket shots with much finer aperture increments: 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7.

  • Assign custom functions to more buttons: four for stills, four for video and five for image playback.

  • Change the 3D Tracking focus point from white to red for higher contrast in bright conditions.

  • Faster, more reliable 3D Tracking for small, erratic subjects.

  • Improved metering accuracy for interval shooting.

  • Numeric display for focus distance on the camera or compatible lenses.

  • Faster, easier reviewing of images in playback mode.

  • Support for NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR power zoom lens.

To upgrade your Z 9’s firmware to version 4.0, you need to download the firmware file from Nikon’s website1 and copy it to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera. Then, insert the card into the camera and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

The firmware 4.0 is a free update that aims to enhance the performance and functionality of the Z 9. Nikon will continue to provide firmware updates that respond to user needs and expand the capabilities of its cameras.
