Canon-C50-Cinema-Camera

Canon’s New EOS C50 is a Full-Frame 7K Cinema Powerhouse

Canon has officially unveiled the EOS C50, the newest and most compact camera in its Cinema EOS lineup. Designed for filmmakers and content creators who need power and flexibility in a small package, the EOS C50 combines high-end cinema features with the ease of use of a mirrorless camera, making it a true hybrid for both video and photography.

Weighing just over one and a half pounds, the EOS C50 is Canon’s smallest and lightest cinema camera to date. Its small size makes it perfect for handheld shooting, documentaries, and creating social media content. Despite its compact form, it is packed with professional features, including a brand new 7K full-frame sensor, internal RAW recording, and advanced connectivity options.

Powerful Sensor and Recording Options

At the core of the EOS C50 is a new 32-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. This powerful sensor allows the camera to record stunning 7K video at up to 60 frames per second (fps) using Canon’s Cinema RAW Light format. For those needing higher frame rates, the camera offers oversampled 4K video at up to 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps for slow-motion shots.

A standout feature is the 3:2 “open gate” recording mode. This allows filmmakers to use the entire height of the sensor, providing more flexibility in post-production to re-frame shots for different aspect ratios, such as for both horizontal and vertical video delivery. The camera also supports various professional recording codecs, including XF-AVC and new, easy-to-manage MP4 formats like XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S.

For low-light situations, the EOS C50 features a Dual Base ISO of 800 and 6400 when shooting in Canon Log, ensuring clean images even in challenging lighting conditions.

Design, Handling, and Connectivity

The EOS C50 is built for versatility. It comes with a detachable top handle that includes two full-size XLR audio inputs, a record button, and a zoom rocker, giving filmmakers professional audio and control options right out of the box.

The camera features an RF mount, making it compatible with Canon’s excellent range of RF lenses. It also includes professional ports such as a full-size HDMI, USB-C, a timecode jack, and 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks. For modern workflows, the EOS C50 has built-in Wi-Fi and supports Frame.io Camera to Cloud integration, allowing you to upload files directly from the set.

While it includes an active cooling fan to prevent overheating, some features found on larger cinema cameras, like built-in ND filters and an electronic viewfinder (EVF), are not included to maintain its compact size.

A Capable Photo Camera

The EOS C50 is not just for video. By switching to Photo mode, it becomes a highly capable 32-megapixel still camera. It can shoot RAW images at an impressive 40 fps using its electronic shutter and features an advanced autofocus system with human, animal, and even bird recognition. However, since it does not have a mechanical shutter, its ability to sync with flash is limited.
