New DJI Mini 5 Pro Boasts a 1-Inch Sensor and Night-Flying Vision

The new DJI Mini 5 Pro is here. This new model maintains the signature sub-250-gram weight class of the Mini series while incorporating significant technical upgrades to its camera, gimbal, obstacle avoidance system, and battery performance.

The primary upgrade in the Mini 5 Pro is the 50-megapixel 1-inch CMOS sensor, a notable increase in size from the 1/1.3-inch sensor found in its predecessor. In simple terms, this larger sensor can capture more light and detail, resulting in stunningly clear photos and videos, especially in low-light situations.

For video, the drone is capable of recording 4K resolution at 60fps with High Dynamic Range (HDR). It also offers slow-motion 4K at 120fps. The system supports 10-bit colour depth with D-Log M and HLG colour profiles.

A new digital zoom function, termed “48mm Med-Tele mode,” provides a 2x magnification that DJI states offers higher image resolution than the digital zoom on previous models.

The camera is mounted on a redesigned 3-axis gimbal that now allows for 225 degrees of roll rotation. This mechanical capability enables the drone to perform True Vertical Shooting, capturing vertical-aspect-ratio video and photos without requiring a digital crop. The airframe remains foldable and lightweight.

Safety and flight performance have seen a huge boost. The Mini 5 Pro is equipped with Nightscape Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing. Using a forward-facing LiDAR sensor and multiple vision cameras, the drone can now detect and avoid obstacles in all directions, even when flying at night. This makes flying in challenging conditions and using the Return-to-Home feature much safer.

The drone’s flight endurance has been increased. The standard battery provides a maximum flight time of 36 minutes, while an optional “Intelligent Flight Battery Plus” extends this to a maximum of 52 minutes.

The DJI Mini 5 Pro closes the gap between hobbyist drones and professional tools with several key additions:
42GB Internal Storage: You no longer need to rely solely on a microSD card. With a huge amount of built-in storage, you can save footage directly to the drone.
Dual Card Slots: For extra peace of mind, you can use two memory cards at once. This allows you to create instant backups or save photos on one card and videos on another.
Improved Connectivity: With Wi-Fi 6, you can download your photos and videos from the drone to your phone much faster than before.
